Georgia has a very, very old Jewish community that scholars believe goes back to 586 B.C. (the 6th century B.C. or B.C.E.) The Jewish community dating back to that time are known as Gurjim or Ebraeli Jews and they would generally be considered Sephardic, as they arrived after the fall of Babylon, where it is believed they came from. This synagogue (or Temple) was built from 1895-1903. The congregation shares both Sephardic and Ashkenazi traditions.

The Beit Rachel Synagogue has several stories regarding its’ history. It was once known as the “Ashkenazi Synagogue.” Please read the brass plaque in a photo below. Ashkenazi Jews came to Georgia by many accounts, from Russia but they also arrived in Tbilisi from the South of Georgia. (Please note: Embrace does not endorse any particular historical view. We leave all historical documentation and proof to the scholars.)
