Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral is the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Beirut and outlying areas. It is the Beirut’s oldest church: it has been built over the disappeared Anastasi Romano-Byzantine Cathedral. Excavations done largely after the Lebanese civil war found evidence of early Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Ottoman eras.
There is a museum and necropolis running under part of the church. The current church was built in 1767. As part of the Greek Orthodox complex, there is a new church, the old church and a tiny Nouriyeh Virgin Chapel separate from both.
