Sheikh Hamid-i Vali was initially a prominent Islamic scholar who studied in Sam, Tabriz and Erdebil. Somunca Baba taught at the Bursa Ulu Camii (mosque) but he like many other Islamic saints moved from pure scholarship to deep compassionate work including baking bread (without being known or recognized as a scholar) and distributing it to the poor.
It is interesting to note that Sidi (Sufi) Dokali whose shrine is on the oceanside of Rabat, Morocco was greatly beloved for gathering firewood, selling it and using it to buy bread which he distributed to the poor.
