Kalenderhane Mahallesi Mosque, Istanbul
Throughout the world one belief system builds on top of another. Throughout Europe, Britian and Ireland most the grand cathedrals were built on top of indigenous, (include Celtic, Druid), Greek and Roman sacred places. In some parts of the world, there are archaeological digs that have 4 or 5 layers of different traditions.
The Kalenderhane Mosque area and buildings are believed to have been used by Romans (non-Christian) , Roman Catholics (Christian) and Eastern Orthodox Christians. (The current building is of Middle Byzantine era, built in the archaeological style of a cross used by the Eastern Orthodox Christians.) Later Dervishes, the Kalenderis - independent wandering Dervishes (in other parts of the world known as Qalanders, especially on the Indian subcontinent) were given this building in the mid- fifteenth century. Most recently, since the 1700’s it was dedicated to the Islamic community as a whole.
