Traditional beliefs record that Saint Nino,(296-340?A.D.) the most revered saint in Georgia converted King Mirian III to Christianity in the 4th century. She climbed Mtskheta’s highest hill to pray and erected a cross on it. (King Mirian III may have erected a cross also.) The King declared the Christianity would be the state religion. Jvari Church was built in the 6th century to commemorate this event. It is about approximately 30 kilometers from Tbilisi.
The Jvari Church is representative of the tetra conch architectural style. Part of St. Nino’s cross remains visible at Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi, Georgia.
