Davit Gareja was a Syrian Christian ascetic monk who established the Lavra and Udabno monasteries in the 6th century.
The photos of Lavra Monastery, are of an active monastery where monks currently live. The photos of the cave monastery are of the Udabno Monastery which was abandoned long ago.
It is still revered, as can be seen in some of the photos with flowers, candles or a recent print of the Virgin Mary in some of the caves.
Over the centuries Udabno Monastery caves have been badly damaged by various soldiers and more recently by senseless graffiti.
