Ateshgah Fire Temple - Suraxani, Azerbaijan
The current buildings at the Ateshgah Fire Temple are believed to have been constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries by Hindus and possibly jointly with Zoroastrians (Parsi) from India. When petroleum plants were developed in the area after 1883, it stopped being used as a place of worship.

Whatever archeologists and historians may surmise about the past,
Zoroastrians from India consider Ateshgah Temple and the land that it encompasses a Holy place and make regular pilgrimmages to it.

Azerbaijan borders Iran (Persia) and the people have much shared history, as well as culture and beliefs. Zoroastrianism was the primary religion in Persia and Azerbaijan from the 6th century BC, until the advent of Islam. After Persia and Azerbaijan became Islamic, most Zoroastrians left Persia for India (where they are known as “Parsi”.) Numerous scholars believe that Parsi traders from India later came to the Ateshgah Temple on pilgrimmage and to trade.
