The construction of the St. Elias and St. Gregory The Illuminator Cathedral in Beirut, an Armenian Catholic Church was funded in 1928 by Pope Pius XI.

It is patterned after the directives of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, founder and patron saint of the Armenian Church.
